The Portuguese are very family orientated and the education of their children is extremely important to them and the country has one of the best education systems in Europe with many world renown Universities.
The beautiful University of Coimbra is the oldest University in Europe and stands proud above the city on the bank of the Mondego River.

It is basically a four-tiered system similar to that of the UK and compulsory education lasts nine years usually taking the pupils from the age of 6 to 15.

The school year usually runs from mid September to the end of June with the individual schools setting the actually dates but there must be at least 180 school days in each year.

The provision of basic compulsory education (ensino basico) is split into three consecutive cycles :

First cycle lasting four years for 6 to 10 year olds (Primary School)
Second cycle lasting two years for 10 to 12 year olds (Secondary Schools)
Third cycle lasting three years for 12 to 15 year olds (Secondary Schools)

Nursery School (Jardims de Infancia)

Nursery School is optional and children usually attend from the age of 3 until 6 and most villages have one. They may be state run, charitable institutions, private or cooperative organisations.
The teachers are very dedicated and tend to treat the children as if they were their own. Very high importance is put on this early stage of learning and much of the work done is based of having fun while learning with lots of painting and craftwork.

Primary School  (Escolas Basicas)

Children usually move up to Primary School at the age of 6 until they are 10.
These are normally in the nearby town with state run minibuses and coaches making sure all children can attend.

Secondary School (Escolas Secundarias)

Usually from the ages of 10 to 15 children attend Secondary School which are located in the nearby towns or cities.
In the main the education system in Portugal places a higher degree of discipline on the students.

University (Universidade)

As mentioned earlier, Portugal has some of the best Universities in Europe specialising in a wide range of subjects with the medical field being high on the agenda. Many of the trainees doctors move on to the Coimbra Hospital which has one of the most advanced heart units in the world.
